Public Libraries Are the Only Data Centers I Support: The Meaning Behind the Shirt

Part of our guide: Book Bans and Public Libraries: What Is Happening, and What People Wear

"Public Libraries Are the Only Data Centers I Support" is a joke with two targets: it praises the library as the original place where a community stores its information, and it objects to the AI data centers going up in towns across the country. It is one of the best-selling designs at Care & Resist, and it comes as a tee, a hoodie and a crewneck sweatshirt.

What it means

A data center is a warehouse of servers. The ones built for AI use large amounts of electricity and water, and communities have been fighting them at zoning meetings; local opposition blocked or delayed at least 75 projects in the first three months of 2026, according to Data Center Watch. A public library is also a building full of stored information. The difference is that it is open to everyone, it employs people who help you find things, it never sold your data, and it does not drain the aquifer.

So the shirt is a compliment and a complaint at once. Library people read it as love for libraries. Anti-AI people read it as a refusal. Most people who buy it mean both.

Who wears it

  • Librarians and library workers, who wear it to work and get asked about it at the desk.
  • Readers, teachers and Friends of the Library members.
  • Neighbors fighting a data center proposal, who wear it to the county hearing.
  • Writers, artists and tech workers who are tired of AI being put into everything.

When people wear it

National Library Week in April and Banned Books Week in the fall, library board and budget meetings, zoning hearings, and ordinary days at the branch. It also makes a reliable gift, because it is funny before it is political.

The design

Lowercase lettering in a soft retro serif, each letter a different color of a muted rainbow, with a few small sparkles. The sentence is long, so it is stacked on five short lines that read top to bottom like a small poem. It was written and lettered by a person, like every Care & Resist design, and it is printed to order in the USA.

The tee comes in eight garment colors, from Ivory and White to Black and Graphite, with softer shades such as Blossom, Banana, Bay and Chambray in between. The hoodie and the sweatshirt come in Black, White, Sand and Sport Grey. All three are unisex with a relaxed cut and run true to size; see the size and fit guide.

Designs people wear with it

The same two ideas, libraries and machines, in other words.

Questions people ask

What does "Public Libraries Are the Only Data Centers I Support" mean?
It means the wearer supports public libraries, the original community information centers, and opposes the large AI data centers being built in many towns. It is a joke that makes both points at once.

Is it an anti-AI shirt or a library shirt?
Both. Librarians wear it as a library shirt, and people fighting data center proposals wear it as a protest shirt.

Is it a good gift for a librarian?
Yes. It is funny, it is kind to the profession, and patrons ask about it.

Does it come as a hoodie or sweatshirt?
Yes. The same design is available as a tee, a hoodie and a crewneck sweatshirt, and each product page links to the other two.

Can I order it for a group?
Yes. Pick the garment, collect sizes and colors, and we put the whole group on one custom listing that ships together; see group and bulk orders.
