Speak Your Mind, Even if Your Voice Shakes: The Meaning Behind the Shirt

Part of our guide: Human Rights at Home: What They Are, and What People Wear

"Speak your mind, even if your voice shakes" is widely attributed to Maggie Kuhn, who founded the Gray Panthers in 1970 after being forced to retire at 65. It means courage is not the absence of fear; it is saying the thing anyway. It is one of the best-selling designs at Care & Resist, and it comes as a tee, a hoodie and a crewneck sweatshirt.

What it means

Kuhn spent the last decades of her life organizing against age discrimination and for peace, health care and housing, and she was known for telling activists to stand before the people they feared and speak. The National Women's Hall of Fame counts her among its inductees.

The line has outlived its origin because it describes a moment nearly everyone has had: the public comment period, the meeting with the boss, the family dinner, the first time at a microphone. The voice shakes. The point is that a shaking voice still counts.

Who wears it

  • First-time speakers at school boards, city councils and town halls.
  • Organizers and volunteers who spend their days asking other people to speak up.
  • Teachers, counselors and debate coaches, for whom it is practically a job description.
  • Anyone who is shy and does it anyway.

When people wear it

Public comment night, lobby days, marches and rallies, and the first day of a new job or a new school year. It is one of the gentlest shirts in the shop, which makes it one of the most wearable.

The design

Lowercase lettering in a soft retro serif, each letter a different color of a muted rainbow, with a few small sparkles. The full sentence is stacked on four lines, with the comma kept, so it reads the way it is spoken. It was written and lettered by a person, like every Care & Resist design, and it is printed to order in the USA.

The tee comes in eight garment colors, from Ivory and White to Black and Graphite, with softer shades such as Blossom, Banana, Bay and Chambray in between. The hoodie and the sweatshirt come in Black, White, Sand and Sport Grey. All three are unisex with a relaxed cut and run true to size; see the size and fit guide.

Questions people ask

Who said "Speak your mind, even if your voice shakes"?
The line is widely attributed to Maggie Kuhn, the founder of the Gray Panthers, an organization she started in 1970 to fight age discrimination.

What does it mean?
It means that being afraid is not a reason to stay silent. You can be nervous and still say what needs saying, and it counts just as much.

Is it a political shirt?
Only gently. It names no party, person or cause, which is why people wear it to work and school as well as to meetings and marches.

Does it come as a hoodie or sweatshirt?
Yes. The same design is available as a tee, a hoodie and a crewneck sweatshirt, and each product page links to the other two.

Can I order it for a group?
Yes. Pick the garment, collect sizes and colors, and we put the whole group on one custom listing that ships together; see group and bulk orders.
