What to Wear to Vote: Election Day Shirts That Are Allowed at the Polls

You can wear a shirt about voting to the polls in every state. What many states restrict is clothing that names a candidate, a party or a ballot measure. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and early voting opens weeks before that in most states. Here is what the rules are, and what to wear.

The rules are called electioneering laws. Twenty-one states have statutes restricting campaign apparel such as shirts, hats and buttons inside polling places, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures as reported by ABC News. In 2018 the Supreme Court, in Minnesota Voters Alliance v. Mansky, struck down a Minnesota ban on all "political" apparel as too vague, while confirming that states may keep campaign advocacy out of the polling place. If a poll worker objects to what you are wearing, you can usually cover it or turn it inside out, and you still get to vote. Every design below is about voting itself and names no candidate, party or measure.

For every voter

"Registered and Ready" and "I Vote in Every Boring Election" are the two that get worn all season. "Voting is My Cardio" is for the person who has never missed one.

For the first-time voter and the early voter

"First Time Midterm Voter" is a good gift for an eighteen-year-old. "Early Voting Squad" and "My Ballot is Already in the Mail" are for the people who are done before Election Day arrives.

For the carpool, the family and the crew

Voting as a group raises turnout, and matching shirts make the photo. "We Carpool to the Polls", "My Whole Family Votes" and "My Whole Crew is Registered" were written for that.

For poll workers and the people who thank them

Poll workers should follow their county's dress guidance on the day itself. For training day, the ride home and every day after: "Poll Workers are Heroes" and "Your Ballot Passed Through My Hands".

What else to wear and bring

  • Dress for a line. Comfortable shoes and layers. A November morning outside a school gym is cold, which is what the hoodie and sweatshirt versions are for.
  • Bring what your state requires. Identification rules vary; your state or county election office lists exactly what to bring.
  • Know before you go: your polling place, its hours, and your registration status.

About the shirts

Every design is original, written and lettered by a person, and printed to order in the USA. Shirts are unisex with a relaxed cut and run true to size, in a range of garment colors. Many designs also come as a hoodie and a crewneck sweatshirt. Because each piece is printed to order, allow time before your date; details are on the shipping page.

Ordering for a vote drive, a campus group, a League chapter or a poll worker team? Group orders of existing designs go on one custom listing so everyone's sizes and colors ship together; see group and bulk orders. The full sets are in Election Day shirts and voting and election shirts.

Questions people ask

Can you wear a political shirt to vote?
It depends on the message and the state. Shirts that name a candidate, party or ballot measure are restricted inside polling places in many states. Shirts about voting itself, such as "Registered and Ready," are allowed everywhere.

What happens if a poll worker says my shirt is not allowed?
You can usually cover it with a jacket or turn it inside out and then vote. Being asked to cover a shirt does not take away your right to cast a ballot.

Can I wear an issue shirt, like one about libraries or health care, to the polls?
In most places yes, but some states read their rules broadly when an issue is tied to something on that ballot. If you are unsure, bring a layer you can zip up.

What should I wear to vote?
Comfortable shoes, layers for the weather, and anything that does not name a candidate, party or measure. Many people wear a voting-themed shirt for the photo afterward.

When is Election Day 2026?
Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Early voting and mail ballot dates vary by state and start weeks earlier in most.

Can I order matching shirts for my carpool or vote drive?
Yes. Pick the design, collect sizes and colors, and we put the whole group on one custom listing that ships together; see group and bulk orders.
