Unisex with a relaxed cut, true to size, S to 4XL. Garment-dyed heavyweight tee.

Reading is not a security risk. The book got rejected at the mailroom as a security risk, and the book was a dictionary. This shirt is for the books-to-prisoners volunteer who mailed it, the prison librarian who requested it, and the reader inside who has finished every shelf the facility allows.

Wear it to the books-to-prisoners packing night, the corrections oversight hearing, the library conference panel on prison libraries, and the family dinner where a relative asks why prisoners need books. It is a strong gift for a prison librarian, a books-to-prisoners volunteer, a reentry counselor, and the formerly incarcerated reader who wrote the thank-you letter.

Printed on a Comfort Colors 1717 in garment-dyed 6.1 oz ring-spun cotton, soft, evenly colored, and heavy enough to last through every packing night. Direct-to-garment. Ink in the cotton, not on top.

Relaxed, unisex, true to size. S to 4XL. Colors: Black, White, Bay, Blossom. Plus Chambray, Graphite, Ivory and Banana. Also as a hoodie and a sweatshirt. It joins the prison library designs on our book bans and libraries page.

Designed and printed to order in the USA. Machine wash cold, inside out, with like colors. Tumble dry low. Do not bleach or iron the design.

Common questions

Do prisons really reject books as security risks? Routinely, and the rejected lists include dictionaries, history and legal self-help. Books-to-prisoners groups appeal them one at a time.

Would a books-to-prisoners group order these? Groups do, for packing night. Every shirt is printed to order. Any sizes, any colors, one order.

Which color for a packing night? Bay and Ivory read clean. Black for the oversight hearing.

Does the tee run true? Yes. Relaxed body, true to size.

Wear it to: the library board meeting, Banned Books Week, storytime, the bookstore.

Fabric and fit

Comfort Colors 1717: 6.1 oz 100 percent ring-spun cotton, garment-dyed and soft-washed so it feels broken in from the first wear. Relaxed unisex fit, true to size, S to 4XL in eight colors. Double-needle stitching, no side seams, sewn-in label.

Measurements for every size are on the size and fit guide.

Printing and care

Printed to order in the USA, direct to garment: water-based ink goes into the fabric rather than sitting on top, so the print stays soft and does not crack or peel.

Machine wash cold, inside out. Tumble dry low or hang dry. Do not iron the print. More on the fabric and care page.

Shipping and returns

Every shirt is made when you order it and ships from the USA. Current production and delivery times, and how returns work, are on the shipping and returns page. Ordering for a group? See group and bulk orders.
